Northbrook’s housing is mostly postwar — ranch homes, split-levels, and the contemporaries built as the village grew through the 1960s and 70s, with pockets of newer construction along Willow Road and near the Techny corridor. The rugs in these homes tend to reflect that timeline: fewer century-old Persians, more machine-made and hand-knotted area rugs from specialty retailers, wool flatweaves in the kitchens, and higher-traffic synthetics in the family rooms where kids and dogs spend their afternoons.
Those are exactly the rugs most commonly mistreated by truck-mounted carpet cleaning. Modern wool still shrinks under heat. Contemporary natural dyes still bleed under alkaline chemistry. And pet accidents on a Northbrook family’s 9×12 still need foundation-level decontamination — the kind that surface cleaning will not touch. The economics of conservation hand washing apply as much to a $1,200 area rug as they do to a $20,000 antique.
Family-friendly rug care
The services Northbrook clients use most are straightforward: conservation-grade cleaning, foundation-level pet odor treatment, and fiber-safe stain protection applied after cleaning. We also offer non-toxic moth treatment for wool rugs rotated through closets or basements, and premium rug padding cut to size — the single most under-spec’d component of any rug installation.
Every rug is photographed on intake and returned with a written record. Pet accidents are decontaminated through submersion wash and enzyme pre-treatment, not surface spray. Stain protection is applied only after the rug is fully clean and dry, and only with fiber-safe chemistry that is safe for natural dyes.
