Ghorban Ahmadi was born in February 1964 and raised within the hum of Tehran’s Grand Bazaar—the centuries-old heart of the Persian rug world. His father was a key figure in logistics and import–export for the trade, and Ghorban grew up among the color, cadence, and commerce of handwoven art. A second-generation artisan, he learned by touch and by instinct: the tensile strength of wool, the alchemy of natural dyes, the discipline of structure, and the enduring belief that a rug is not merely decoration but inheritance.
Recognized early for his eye and precision, Ghorban was invited to Zurich for a two-year assignment sourcing rare pieces and overseeing complex restorations. That opportunity became nearly a decade of work across Europe. From 1984 to 1993, he collaborated with museum conservators on projects linked to the Louvre, the British Museum, and the State Hermitage Museum in Russia—learning to balance preservation with renewal. Later, from 1994 to 1998, he joined Azad Teppiche in Dortmund, then one of Europe’s foremost rug houses, where he refined large-scale cleaning and restoration processes and mentored a new generation of craftspeople.
Ghorban immigrated to the United States in 1999. Over the next two decades he quietly became the specialist other experts called first—entrusted by collectors, galleries, and designers nationwide for the most demanding reweaves, color corrections, and conservation treatments. His approach combined European precision with Persian intuition, earning a reputation built solely on results and word-of-mouth.
His eldest son, Babak Ahmadi (born 1988), grew up within arm’s reach of the worktables—learning every knot, tool, and technique while developing his own sense for design and business. In late 2020, Babak formalized what had long been a family vocation, opening Ahmadi Rug to the public. The 10,000-square-foot Chicago facility unites museum-grade care and modern operations under one roof. By eliminating intermediaries, the Ahmadis built a seamless, insured chain-of-custody—from your home, through restoration, and safely back again.
