Resized so you cannot tell it was resized

People resize rugs for all sorts of reasons — a new room, damaged ends, a desire to move a piece from living room to hallway. When the cutting is clean and the new border is matched correctly, a resized rug looks original. When it is done carelessly, the rug unravels.

Most rugs can be resized safely. Cutting rugs to size — making a piece smaller to fit a new room — is routine; making one larger is rarely practical. Some antiques cannot be cut at all, and on those we will tell you so before we touch the piece.

Our resizing process — step by step

  1. 01

    Measurement & planning

Precise measurement and pattern-aware marking of cut lines. We never cut before the plan is agreed in writing.

  2. 02

    Precision cutting

Clean edges, no unravelling. The cut runs along the weave, not through it.

  3. 03

    Re-bordering

Matching or complementary border applied. We draw from a stock of period-appropriate borders for antique pieces.

  4. 04

    Overcasting

All edges hand-overcast in matching thread to seal the foundation permanently.

  5. 05

    Final inspection

Dimensions verified to the tolerance you signed off on. Photographed before return.

Common questions

  • Can any rug be resized?

Most handmade and machine-made rugs can be resized. Antique rugs require assessment first — some are too fragile or too valuable to cut, and we will tell you so before we start.

  • Will resizing damage the rug?

Not when it is done correctly. We secure all edges and apply matching or complementary borders to protect the integrity of the piece.

  • How much does resizing cost?

Starting at $150, priced by the extent of cutting and re-bordering required. Antique re-bordering is quoted separately.

  • How long does resizing take?

Most resizing jobs are complete within 5–10 business days. Custom borders or unusual shapes can extend to three weeks.

  • Can a rug be made larger?

Not as a standard service. Making a rug bigger means sourcing wool that matches the original in weight, spin, dye, and age, and the join line is almost always visible. Cutting rugs to size — making them smaller — is the reliable path; enlarging is only practical on certain commercial pieces.

  • Can I resize a rug myself?

You can make the cut. Finishing the edge correctly is the hard part — an unfinished cut edge starts to unravel within weeks, and every step on the rug accelerates it. That is why DIY resizing usually ends in a larger repair bill than a professional resize would have cost. Have it hand-finished.
