Evanston’s architectural heritage is one of the most varied on Chicago’s North Shore. The neighborhood’s Victorian and Queen Anne homes along Orrington, Forest, and Judson — many built for faculty families in Northwestern University’s early decades — contain the kind of formal rooms that rugs were originally designed to fill. The city’s lakefront properties and the established neighborhoods around the Evanston Arts Center bring a different clientele: families with rugs acquired over decades, often mixing heirloom Persian pieces with contemporary Moroccan and flatweave work.
What these households share is a rug cleaning need that outpaces what most local services can handle properly. The rugs most commonly found in Evanston homes — wool Orientals, Turkish kilims, hand-knotted Persians, and natural fiber pieces — all require conservation-grade hand washing. Steam cleaning and hot-water extraction, the default of most carpet cleaning services, create real risks for these fiber types: dye bleeding, wool felting, and foundation saturation that leads to persistent odor.
In-house facility, not a van
Ahmadi Rug is based in Skokie, less than four miles from central Evanston. We collect and return throughout Evanston — from the lakefront buildings near Dempster Street to the historic homes in the Lakeshore Historic District, and the leafy residential streets of southwest Evanston near the Grosse Pointe Lighthouse. Your rug is picked up, taken to our10,000 sq ft in-house workshop, cleaned with conservation-grade hand washing protocols, and returned within 5–7 business days.
Every rug in our facility is individually photographed on intake. Dye stability is tested before any cleaning begins. Our drying conditions are controlled — no forced heat, no commercial tumble equipment. The result is a clean rug that hasn’t been stressed by the process of getting it that way.
