Heat felts wool permanently
Hot-water extraction runs water above 100°F through the pile. Wool is a protein fibre — above that threshold it felts and shrinks, and the change is irreversible. The rug comes back stiff and a size smaller than it left.
Alkaline detergents break dye bonds
The high-alkaline detergents carpet machines use release the mordant bonds that hold natural dyes in place. On anything pre-1950 — and most hand-knotted rugs — that means colours bleed into one another and cannot be put back.
A saturated foundation rots
Carpet cleaning soaks the cotton or silk foundation and leaves it to dry in place on your floor. Trapped moisture rots the foundation from the inside, and the first sign is usually dry rot you can hear cracking when the rug is rolled.
